A2 Tool Steel as a Low-Distortion Choice for Precision Blanking Dies
Precision blanking dies need wear resistance without giving up dimensional control during hardening. Oil-hardening grades can move more than the drawing allows, while very high-wear grades may be unnecessarily brittle for complicated sections. AISI A2 tool steel for precision blanking dies provides a widely used middle ground.
Why air hardening matters
A2 is a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium cold work steel. DIN 1.2363, JIS SKD12 and X100CrMoV5-1 are common international designations. Its air-hardening response reduces the severity of quenching compared with oil-hardening grades, supporting lower distortion in complex punches, dies, gauges and fixtures.
The Keyspark page describes A2 as offering better wear resistance than O1 while retaining more toughness than higher-carbon, higher-chromium wear-first grades. That balance makes it useful for blanking, piercing, forming and medium-duty shear applications where both edge life and chipping resistance matter.
Design the heat-treatment allowance
Low distortion does not mean zero distortion. Tool geometry, stock orientation, residual stress and temperature uniformity still influence the result. Rough machine with balanced stock removal, keep enough allowance for final grinding and stress relieve after major machining. Protect the surface from decarburization during austenitizing.
Air or positive-pressure gas quenching is common for A2. Prompt tempering and repeated tempering help stabilize the structure and reduce retained austenite. The final hardness should follow the workpiece material, edge geometry and dominant failure mode. A punch that chips may need a different target from a guide plate that wears gradually.
Wire EDM can leave a recast layer and tensile surface stress. Remove the affected layer where appropriate and consider stress relief before the tool enters service. During grinding, use adequate coolant and avoid burning the surface; a hardness certificate cannot compensate for finishing damage.
Make the purchase order measurable
Specify AISI A2 or the governing equivalent standard, shape, dimensions, quantity, annealed hardness and surface condition. Add machining allowance, straightness or flatness tolerance, ultrasonic-testing class and the required material certificate. For large sections, define sample location and orientation so results represent the working area.
Keyspark lists forged or hot-rolled round bar, flat bar and custom shapes with black, turned and ground finishes. Sending the tool application and desired service hardness with the inquiry helps align steel supply, heat treatment and finishing. The result should be judged by stable dimensions and predictable die life, not by the grade name alone.
